World’s Tallest River Rapid Drop Coming To Orlando Summer 2018

Posted on

ORLANDO, Fla. (April 13, 2017) –SeaWorld Orlando announces its latest world-class attraction, Infinity Falls, to debut summer 2018. Thrilling rapids will roar through the brand new rainforest river experience, while adventure-seeking guests plunge down the world’s tallest river rapid drop.

“We are constantly looking at new ways to amaze our guests – Infinity Falls will do that, and more,” said Jim Dean, President of SeaWorld Orlando Parks. “From the excitement of the thrilling rapids, to the unique vertical lift element, it will be an adventure that appeals to the entire family. Infinity Falls continues our commitment to investing in our park, and developing new ways to entertain and inspire our guests with meaningful, fun-filled vacations.”

To bring Infinity Falls to life, designers were inspired by the rainforests of South America and the flowing rivers found within. Each raft will twist and turn through a lush jungle environment as guests experience the feel of exhilarating Class IV rapids. A unique vertical elevator will lift each raft for a dramatic launch into the river, 40 feet below.

“Water makes up more than 70% of our planet,” said Brian Morrow, Vice President of Theme Park Design Experience. “We developed Infinity Falls to tell new stories that showcase the beauty and sheer power of water and the amazing wildlife that lives in it. The result is a new river rapids adventure for our guests to explore, and actively help freshwater ecosystems in a way that only SeaWorld can bring to life.”

The addition of Infinity Falls is the perfect addition to SeaWorld’s ever-growing ride portfolio. From the roller coaster thrills of Mako, Manta and Kraken to the water flume fun of Journey to Atlantis, Infinity Falls will soon join the park’s famed attractions as a must-do experience in Orlando.

Infinity Falls will be the centerpiece of a newly themed surrounding area, fully immersing guests in a rainforest canopy. After riding the rapids on Infinity Falls, the entire family can explore the village and take part in interactive experiences that combine play with education to create a positive impact on freshwater ecosystems. SeaWorld’s Animal Ambassadors will also provide up-close encounters with animals native to South America.

Infinity Falls will open at SeaWorld Orlando in summer 2018. #SeaworldOrlando

DISCOVERY COVE Baby boom includes four first-time moms!

Posted on

Five baby bottlenose dolphins were born at Discovery Cove within one month of each other:

  • Kona, a girl, was born August 3 to mom Roxy;

  • Titan, a boy, was born August 6 to mom Calypso;

  • Nero, a boy, was born August 7 to mom Nueces;

  • Star, a girl, was born August 14 to mom Stella; and

  • Storm, born September 2 to mom Hailey.

Storm’s gender has not yet been determined.

At birth, each calf weighed approximately 35 pounds and measured about 43 inches in length.  The babies each nurse for several minutes every hour and get 100% of their nutrition from their mothers’ milk.

“An animal birth is a very special time for our team, and having five babies at once is remarkable,” said Discovery Cove Animal Trainer Gina McDaniel.  “The last time we had this many new babies was 2009, so this is an exciting time for our dolphins and our animal care team.”

The new moms are attentive, keeping their babies close and swimming constantly to create a “slip stream,” or wake, in which the calves can swim easily, exerting as little energy as possible. Within hours of their arrival, the calves’ tails and dorsal fins — soft and pliable at birth — gradually stiffen, which helps them learn to swim on their own.

“Calypso, Nueces, Stella and Hailey are all first-time moms, so Roxy has been a great role model for them,” said McDaniel.  “Dolphins are highly social animals, so it’s common for new moms to get assistance from experienced moms, who are known in the dolphin world as ‘aunties.’”

The babies will stay close to their mothers for some time and will soon have the opportunity to interact and play with one another, meet the other moms and eventually be introduced to social groups within the park.

A team of trainers and veterinarians are watching over the moms and babies around the clock, carefully monitoring and recording their respiration rates, nursing and overall progress.  The data and observations gathered by Discovery Cove will be shared with zoological facilities all over the world.

“We are in a unique position to be able to document dolphins’ physiological and behavioral traits up-close, which adds to the collective body of knowledge regarding their calving, nursing and care-taking habits,” McDaniel said.  “This information is especially valuable to researchers and rescue organizations working with them in the wild.  For instance, it is difficult to understand or determine why the dolphin population has suddenly decreased, or a dolphin has stranded itself on the beach.  Through our research, observation and information, we help establish that baseline for what is normal.”

Guests to Discovery Cove may catch a glimpse of the new babies in the coming weeks, but the park has not yet announced when they will be seen on a regular basis.  Discovery Cove will keep fans regularly updated on the babies’ progress at facebook.com/DiscoveryCove and instagram.com/discoverycove.
